Research Multimedia Databases

In the last couple of years, the main focus of the research on databases pertained to applications of declarative data semantics in the areas of data distribution, parallel data processing, constraint specification and query languages. Significant achievements include the provision of semantic solutions for casual and open environments such as the Internet and the elaboration of frameworks aimed at testing the correctness of global and local data-distribution schemes. A crucial resolution has been reached concerning an exquisite suitability of the semantic language for systems and environments that cannot be protected by human authorization. Furthermore, the conducted research offered solutions for several classical problems such as rule ordering and termination and recursive non-procedural queries (e.g. critical path, bill of materials and family tree). Finally, the usefulness of semantic specifications (both data definition and data manipulation) has been demonstrated for automatic transformation into relational equivalents. The main future research objective in this field is the design and development of more intelligent database systems and related sophisticated facilities for the end-user.
