ICE Project organisation

This page describes the way things are organized in the ICE project; regular meetings, where to find documents and software, and which computer to use for experiments.

Meetings

We try to have a meeting with everybody working on the ICE project once a week, usually this will be on a Friday. At this meeting everyone will talk about what he/she is doing, what problems you encountered, and what your plans are for next week.

Documents

If you need information or documents on the ICE project, almost everything is available via the web. We have some general information and finished reports and papers available online via the publications page of the ICE project.

At the publications page of the ICE project, there is also a link to a secured folder that is only accessible from a computer in our network (just like this page). This section contains templates, draft versions of papers and software. Note that the draft papers and reports are for internal review only. Please do not distribute them to other people outside of the ICE project. If you want to distribute your own software or documents to people in the ICE project, contact Patrick and he will place it in the secured ICE folder.

Also available in the secured www-folder are some manuals on flying in general, how to fly a Cessna, and the operational procedures of the F16 (offical US airforce documents and Falcon 4 simulator manual). These manuals are quite large and can also be obtained in print from Patrick (in room 12.160).

Computers

There are several computers on which flight simulator software is installed. The main machine that we use for experiments is VECTRA. Unfortunately at the moment VECTRA is also being used by other people and is therefore (temporarily?) moved to room 12.140. You can still access all software on VECTRA from any computer in the lab, but running a simulator over the network can be slow. If you cannot access VECTRA, the MOVANO machine has a backup of all software and documents on VECTRA. Please do not make any changes to the software on VECTRA or MOVANO. Instead place a copy of the software on your local machine and apply the changes there.
Note: we have recently setup a new computer in the lab to replace VECTRA. This new machine is called BEVERLY.

Simulation software

We started out the ICE project using the open-source Flightgear simulator since this simulator allowed us to make changes to the software and receive data from the simulator while it is running. However, Flightgear is under continuous development and has many bugs. Version 0.7.10 was the last version that allowed us to poll data at a rate of 2 times per second. Due to a bug in later versions, this was reduced to once every 5 seconds. This is the reason that we switched to Microsoft's flight simulator 2002. In MSFS 2002 it is also possible to get data from the simulator while it is running and it is much more stable and has more options than Flightgear. We sometimes also use the Falcon 4 F-16 simulator, but you cannot get data from this simulator. It is only used to test and check F-16 procedures.

Mailinglist

We have a mailinglist that is used to send messages to all people involved in the project. This list is used to announce new developments or to announce when the next meeting is scheduled. If you have something that is interesting to everyone in the project, you can send an email to ice@dutids.twi.tudelft.nl

If you have any questions please contact Patrick Ehlert (room 12.160) or Leon Rothkrantz (room 12.060).
