A Hybrid Reasoning System for Conceptual Design

A hybrid system is presented that supports conceptual design as a progressive reasoning process. Alternative solutions are generated and evaluated at several levels of abstraction to find the best concept. The system consists of four components that are applied sequentially. The components communicate primarily by exchanging solutions. This approach avoids many integration problems between the system components. This approach is applied in EADOCS, a design system for composite sandwich panels.
