The BRIDGE project specifically targets large technical industrial applications, such as transportation and production systems, where at consecutive stages of operation different diagnosis tasks for identification of faults and corrective actions are to be performed consistently. The BRIDGE approach is beneficial over existing approaches when some of the following problems arise:
- Development of functional or behavioural models of these large applications is practically or economically infeasible.
- Modification of existing behavioural models for adjustments to the technical application is often neglected due to the complexity of the models.
- The possible occurrence of faults and failures can only be expressed with some degree of uncertainty.
- The symptoms, additional identification tests and actions can be defined accurately.
- Response times for on-line diagnosis have to be predictable and meet real-time requirements.
- Exchange of knowledge and experience is vital for improving efficiency in operating the application.
