Well, the files are in a (for me at least) somewhat strange format called DOS EPS (DOS Encapsulated PostScript). This is different from real EPS, as it contains a binary header and optionally a metafile and a TIFF preview image (depending on the program generating it).
In other words, it sucks when you use TeX or LaTeX, because TeX and dvips only understand the real encapsulated Postscript. Therefore, I converted them with doseps2eps, a small Perl script to extract the real thing.
